Aromatherapy and Pregnancy
Are essential oils safe to use during pregnancy?

The answer is yes. In saying this It is essential that you have the guidance of a fully qualified Aromatherapist, however you may find there are some Aromatherapists may disagree. If you would like to use essential oils I highly recommend you do your research and discuss your options with a Fully qualified Aromatherapist. There is very little known about the use of essential oils during pregnancy and here I will focus on my personal experiences and recommendations.
What you should take into consideration ~
Your Health, we are all individuals and most likely have different needs
Whether you have had any previous problems during pregnancy
What stage you are in
Essential oil burner:
Most essential oils can be used in the burner during pregnancy. Because heat is used they evaporate into the air and therefore the amount that may get into your blood stream is very minimal if any at all. Using the burner is excellent for uplifting your emotions, assisting with mood change, evoking calm and peacefulness, energising or relaxing.
Aromatherapy full body massage is not recommended in the first trimester, neck and shoulder, hands and face can be massaged. However there are other topical applications that can be used.
Benefits of Aromatherapy massage ~
relaxing, calming, promotes blood flow, fluid retention, muscular aches and pains, depression, stress and anxiety, balance hormones post birth, healing, bonding with baby and more…
Dilution for a topical application 1.25% or less
100ml of carrier = 25drops of essential oil in total
50ml of carrier = 12 drops of essential oil in total
25ml of carrier = 6 drops of essential oil in total
Bathing and foot baths - You may choose to use a dispersant to assist in the essential oil’s dispersing into the water, so that there are no large globules floating, that may potentially cause a reaction. Having a reaction is highly unlikely and will depend on your skin condition and general health.
Benefits of Bathing:
Relaxing, muscular aches and pain, lower back pain, hemorrhoids, insomnia, urinary tract infections, fluid retention, dry skin, would healing, pain management,
Benefits of Foot Baths:
Headaches, varicose veins, relaxing, urinary tract infections, fluid retention, swelling of the feet and legs, leg aches and pain
Dry or steam inhalations which method you choose will depend on what essential oils you are using and what you are treating.Inhalations are fast acting as they are a direct link to the brain.
Benefits of Inhalations:
Cold and flu symptoms, headaches, sinusitis, headaches, mood swings, depression, fear, stress, anxiety, morning sickness, loss of appetite, insomnia, tiredness
Topical application can be used for specific treatments for example varicose veins, muscular aches and pain, lower back pain, heart burn, during labour, post birth, episiotomy, wound healing, surgical stitches, stretch marks
Compresses can also be used for headaches, pain management, muscle spasm
Room sprays are also a lovely and easy way to use Essential oils to promote energy, relaxation, uplift your emotions
Citrus essential oils are the safest to use right through your pregnancy for various symptoms. To understand and find out more information it is recommended you consult with a fully qualified Aromatherapist.
Some essential oils are to be avoided during your pregnancy especially in the first tri-mester and some should not be used until the last stages, during birth.
Essential oil properties to consider or be aware of:
Emmenogogue - assists in regulating the menstrual cycle, not recommended during pregnancy.
Parturient - encourages labour.
Galactogogue - promotes milk production.

Question by an Aromatherapy student:
My Answer :
Hello folks here are a couple of mini case studies of mine on essential oils and applications for psoriasis.
When working with clients that have psoriasis my treatments have been focused on reducing the symptoms such as dry flakey skin, inflammation/redness/irritation, itching, skin repair and on an emotional stress, anxiety and nervous tension.
This is a tricky condition to treat and in my experience the condition usually comes back or the essential oils simply have no effect. Changing the blend combinations can work and it really is about treating your client as an individual. I also feel that treatment from the inside combined with essential oil applications will result in a better outcome. However I am yet to see the condition completely healed.
Food allergies may play a role in causing psoriasis, and therefore need to be identified.
Easier said than done in todays world is to avoid stressful situations and choose essential oils that are good anti-inflammatory, anti-pruritic, soothing and calming oils.
Client one: highly stressed job and had been through a horrific bus accident several years previously to me knowing her.
I would make her up creams to apply 2-3 x daily or as she needed, the results where great for a short period of time. She persisted for a while and in the end stopped treatments as nothing was working long term. I believe the biggest factor was stress for her, she worked within the natural therapies industry, was a homeopath and studying to be come a life coach. (I am keeping this short) I focused on the red, itchy skin and her stress and tension levels. By the way I worked with her for 9 years and knew her very well. Basically what I did was slightly change the combinations, I do this regularly with my clients as whether it be physiologically, emotionally or spiritually we are changing always and it keeps our body, mind and spirit on its toes;) (not always the case).
A cream was used for application as the psoriasis, which was confirmed by her specialist was around her chin, eyes and hair line. I noticed how every time she was under pressure that her face would flare up. Essential oils used in a natural base cream (no synthetic preservatives), certified organic rosehip oil, German Chamomile, Calendular CO2 and Everlasting. I also used Myrrh and Patchouli to change the blends.
As I said the results were fast, however they did not last.
Client 2 : Several years ago when I was teaching one of my co-workers came to me about her husband, who didn’t want to come and see me, however was open to trying some treatments. He had psoriasis on his scalp, also confirmed by a G.P. Once again the treatments worked extremely well on the short term. I recommended white Argiletz French clay with German Chamomile and Everlasting every 2-3 days and coconut oil on the weekends. He was in an extremely stressful job!
These clients were unable to leave there positions in work? therefore the condition continued.
I have a couple of clients that come to me off and on for a cream, which they do get relief from I also suggest relaxation techniques, burning essential oils or using room and body sprays to support them on an emotional level.
Hope that gives you some insight.
x
When working with psoriasis and many other conditions I focus on the symptoms, there are other treatments that may be necessary and it is up to you as a practitioner and or client to research and gather as much information as possible.

For as long as I can remember I have felt a strong connection to the Fae folk and Angelic realms. I have called upon them for loving support, guidance and strength through out my life, they have always been here with me.
A few months ago a dear friend came to stay, we had not seen each other for around 11years! We were rolling Aromatherapy scented beeswax candles, writing goals, doing tarot readings, having a beautiful time. She spoke about my connection, love and faith of the Fae and Angels, and how I am always using my collection of essential oils when working with subtle energies.
Yes I answered… Well (she said), why don’t you create a range to align with their energy. I smiled, it was one of those aha moments, at that instant I felt divine inspiration flowing through me and I started writing down Faerie names and essential oil blends that were forming in my mind at a very fast rate! This was the beginning of my beautiful range of ‘Ethereal’.
I am very grateful, blessed and excited to present you with this spell binding and enchanting range and I thank my dear friend Tiffany for planting the seed that has now come to fruition.

I love being ble to share information about my favourite subject Aromatherapy ♥
Aromatherapy baths are so healing on all levels and they are a way of supporting yourself at home for relaxation, assisting with stress, tension, anxiety and also work on a physiological level for treating skin and reproductive complaints.
You have two pathways of absorption via your skin and through breathing. Firstly your smell preference plays a very important role in assisting with relaxation. If you like what you are inhaling you will have an immediate positive response.
I will suggest some oils here that can assist with relaxation, relieve tension and reduce anxiety.
Create a sacred space for yourself, I like to set the scene with soft music, candles burning and of course choose my favourite oils. Once you have everything ready and your bath is ready to hop into gather your oils and add up to 6-8 in total for a healthy adult, halve that amount for children and during pregnancy. Agitate the water to release and break-up the essential oils, some people like to use a dispersant. The reason for this is so that there are not large globules of essential oil floating around. I personally do not find this necessary, if you do use a carrier oil for example, the essential oils must be added to that first and then poured in to the bath. Warning ~ use a anti-slip mat as carrier oil make the bath slippery!
Ok now to the yummy part ~ Essential oils ~
Rose, Neroli and Jasmine are beautiful oils they can be used on their own or combined. This is a truly beautiful blend, strongly feminine and very healing on all levels.
Patchouli, Bergamot and Geranium another of my favourite combinations a lovely balancing blend.
Vetiver and Rosewood a very relaxing and grounding combination.
Frankincense with Geranium, Rose or Neroli is simply delicious.
Sandalwood, Lemon and Rose is supberb.
Clary Sage, Sweet Marjoram and Ylang Ylang are deeply relaxing.
Sweet Orange and Mandarin are aslo relaxing, however I do not recommend Mandairn in the bath as it can cause chloasma (temporary dis-colouration of your skin) when combined with hot water.
